Review WordPress visibility, permalinks, archives, sitemaps and plugin overlap. Check the published output rather than relying on editor scores.
An SEO plugin helps manage metadata, but it cannot independently decide which content deserves indexing. In WordPress, many problems originate in archives, templates and global settings. Review those layers before optimising individual articles.
Check visibility and stable URLs
Review search engine visibility settings and confirm their effect on the public page. A website initially prepared in staging may accidentally retain restrictions after launch. Also check rules introduced by hosting, plugins or custom code.
Choose a clear permalink structure. Changing it on an established site is a URL migration: inventory existing addresses and prepare redirects first. Do not restructure URLs merely to obtain a green indicator in a tool.
Give archives a deliberate purpose
WordPress can generate category, tag, author and date archives. Not all provide distinct value. An editorially organised category can help readers, while a tag containing one article and no explanation may largely duplicate other lists.
Define the purpose of each archive. Keep useful pages, improve their organisation and exclude variants that should not appear in search. Avoid universal rules: a publication with many authors has different needs from a small service website.
Prevent plugin overlap
When several extensions generate titles, canonical tags or structured data, inspect the published output for duplicates. Assign clear responsibility for each function and test after updates. Disabling a plugin without checking dependencies can also remove useful functionality.
The sitemap should reflect canonical pages eligible for indexing. Compare it with indexing rules and public URLs. A successfully submitted sitemap does not establish that every listed page will be indexed.
Review templates as well as content
Check the main heading, body headings, navigation, images and links across representative page types. A template error can repeat throughout the site. For performance, examine the theme, media and scripts before adding another optimisation plugin.
Keep a staging environment and a backup before major changes. The official WordPress update documentation provides a starting point for responsible maintenance.
Frequently asked questions
Does a green plugin score mean a page is optimised?
No. It checks selected rules within that tool, rather than complete relevance, offer quality or search outcomes.
Should every tag archive be indexed?
Not automatically. Indexing decisions should reflect the actual usefulness of archives and the site’s editorial structure.
