A useful business website starts with decisions about customers, content and outcomes. Here is what to prepare and test at each stage.

Building a business website involves more than choosing a design. Visitors need to understand your offer, find answers to their questions and complete a useful next step. A dependable process starts with a brief, moves through structure and content, and finishes with design, development and testing.

1. Define the outcome the website should support

Choose a primary action: request a quote, book an appointment, place an order or register. «Make it look modern» is a design preference, not a business outcome. For an installation company, a useful enquiry might include the project type, location and contact details. Asking for too much information can also discourage the first conversation.

Document who buys, what problem the service solves and what the sales team needs to know. Decide who receives enquiries and how they assess quality. Traffic becomes meaningful when you can connect it to this process.

2. Plan the page structure before the visual design

List the pages and the job each one performs. A service business might begin with Home, Services, individual pages for its main services, About, Projects and Contact. Add a page when it serves a distinct visitor need, rather than repeating the same keywords.

For each page, write one sentence explaining what the visitor should learn and what they can do next. This often exposes redundant pages before you invest in designing them.

3. Prepare content and assign ownership

Collect service descriptions, photographs you have permission to use, company details and projects approved for public presentation. Clearly mark information that still needs confirmation. Do not fill gaps with invented testimonials or unsupported results.

Assign an owner and approval deadline to each asset. If the agency will write the copy, include writing and revision rounds in the scope. For a bilingual site, allow time for adapting the message and checking links between equivalent pages.

4. Review the design through real tasks

Test a prototype on a phone. Can someone find the service, understand the offer and start an enquiry? Check text size, contrast, navigation and forms. Request the less glamorous states too: invalid input, successful submission and empty results.

During development, define what your team can edit in the CMS and who needs access. A website is easier to maintain when updating a service does not require rebuilding the page.

5. Agree on a launch acceptance checklist

  • Submit actual test forms and confirm the messages arrive.

  • Test navigation, phone links, email links and key pages on mobile.

  • Review SEO titles, descriptions, URLs and indexing settings.

  • Remove demonstration copy and links to the staging environment.

  • Confirm domain ownership, platform access and recovery arrangements.

  • Measure meaningful actions while respecting consent choices.

After launch, repeat the checks on the public domain. The Google SEO Starter Guide explains search accessibility principles; publishing a site and submitting a sitemap do not guarantee immediate indexing.

Frequently asked questions

Does all copy need to be finished before design starts?

You need the structure and main messages first. Final wording can evolve, but designing entirely around placeholder text hides real problems with length and hierarchy.

What should the final handover include?

The agreed access credentials, editing instructions, an integration inventory and maintenance responsibilities. Define these deliverables before work begins.
